We Need Your Feedback!

We are very close to finishing up our Upgrade feature. This will allow you to increase the size of your account as well as the maximum size if single files for a small monthly fee. Here is a list of the price breakdowns we’re going to be providing:

1GB Account (50MB max file size) – Free
1GB Account (100MB max file size) – $1/Month
2GB Account (200MB max file size) – $2/Month
3GB Account (300MB max file size) – $3/Month
4GB Account (400MB max file size) – $4/Month
5GB Account (500MB max file size) – $5/Month
10GB Account (1GB max file size) – $10/Month

But… our first iteration of the Upgrade feature will have only one of these prices, not all of them. The reason being that we want to test the system with a single price before we launch multiple pricing tiers.

What we would really like feedback on is which tier do you feel we should launch first. If you are in a position where you need to upgrade which of the options above would you pay for?

Since we launched our service we have listened very closely to our user base. It’s part of our philosophy to provide a service that people want to use, not a service that we think people want to use. Obviously this portion is no different.

Please leave quick comment, we can’t wait to hear from you.

DropBoks Founder

I think either the 2GB/200MB/$2 or 3GB/300MB/$3 packages are good starting points.

Keep up the good work :)

  2. Lucas on

I would do the 5 GB option – if I’m going to pay I want to feel like I have plenty of storage headroom – but not without a bulk download feature. I feel like my files are safe but stuck on your server with no efficient means of restoring them to my computer.

Also, does this mean there will no longer be a free option?

  3. Marian Yordanov on

According to me the 3GB/300MB/$3 pack is what we would like to start with.

  4. dropboks on

    @Lucas

We will always have the free option, this is just for upgrade.

  5. Spyros Bogdanos on

I think you should start out with the 2GB/$2 per month, because $2 is an amount that nobody thinks too much about, so I think just about anyone would be happy to sign up for $2 per month right off the bat.
Also, I think when you add more payment plans, you should have some inexpensive options for people who need to store programs and stuff, which can be well over 4 GB. Maybe something like a payment for just a specific file? For big uploads, maybe $1 per GB? So, if someone wanted to upload say a 7 GB movie, they can use like Paypal to pay $7 and upload the movie to DropBoks. Just a raw idea for you to consider/build off of. :)

  6. Spyros Bogdanos on

Maybe even $2 per GB or something, considering it would take up a lot of space for you, and someone who has internet good enough to be uploading stuff that big probably has the money to pay for it. >.>

  7. Veron on

No need to think so much, $2 is the right option to start off. Because, you’d just using it to test your system only right?…So, there’ll be no differents made with different price and size for the working of your system.

Further, $2 consider as more affordable compare to larger one as not many people would going to choose the larger size for the starting package to test the upgrade service.

  8. MerleOne on

I vote for the $1 plan, second choice is $2. I really don’t want to spend more, considering the retail price of USB keys.

Thanks for the excellent service !

  9. Adebayor on

Much as I like the service I think I’d look for a free service

  10. Ted Engelke on

    Go for 10gigs.
Most people use this for corporate stuff. At $10.00 a month its a steal.

  11. tuergeist on

2GB/200MB/$2 is a good start if you can book it double or tripple…

  12. derek mccabrey on

I personally am not using any more than the 1gB size at the mo. But I think that the 2gB would be both the right size and affordable for the test.

    Good work. Brilliant site. Thanks.

    Dear Sir,
I have kept all my important file at dropboks.com. Are you charge me for the same?

Please inform me early as possible becasue I will keep all important file in my computer.

    Thanks and Regards,

use the mid point of 5gb. It’s a good starting point. I love the service.

  15. sks46 on

I’m very unhappy to see that you may even be considering charging for the 1gig storage, since many of us will never need anything larger. If you’re going to charge anything at all, I’d expect you to charge more in the range of $3 for 5gig, since your current rate is 60 bux a year – pricey for something that can be found elsewhere for free, especially now with google’s setup….

  16. Jens on

    Hi,
I vote for continuing the free service, but with full features (e.g. HTTPS and sharing) if possible.

Nevertheless, I think $1 per GB is quite ok!
    Have you thouhgt about advertising?
Have you thouhgt about e.g. price per year? Or to pay only once, but a lager amount (e.g. buy 5 Gigabyte for 30 bucks for livetime (users or dropboks) – like to buy a harddisk.

  17. Ricardo Gómez Vecchio on

I use this service just because is free. I would not pay.

  18. Scott Jasper on

I think 2gb would be perfect for launch, because people who use this (awesome) service for transporting files to and from school, like yours truly. :-D I would not mind paying $2 for a 2gb storage box.

  19. Warren on

Go with the $2 or $3, I say.

  20. Paolo Carnevali on

I think that this kind of service should be basically free. Anyway the 2gb option is a fair compromise between free and low cost fee. Excellent service anyway.

  21. DJ from the Netherlands on

I agree with the most of the people here, go with the $2 of $3.
I like the free service, but a higher max upload are things that I like, so that could be a reason for me to upgrade.
(I do not need the larger storage, sometimes I just need to upload larger files…)

  22. Ed on

    You have a great service.

  23. saltlake on

I’d pay such a small price if Dropboks were Safari compatible. Just don’t want to download Fx only for that task(

  24. Nick on

I think the $2 or $3 would be a good starting point, I wouldn’t mind paying that for how great this site is.

  25. lara on

At least the 2gb option – it gives the ability to double the amount of space but is still low cost.

  26. Sam Kelly on

Looks like some people think the devs are going to start charging for the basic 1GB/50MB service. This option isn’t going anywhere, no need to fear.

  27. Calmira on

I use your service because it is free. “IF” I needed more space, I would try to find another service that gave more space for free (I know, I know, I’m cheap). However, I will say that I truly like your application more than anything I have seen before. You have done a wonderful job.

  28. Lars on

I think 2$ is a value that wouldn’t hurt me much.
But for now, I think I won’t get beyond a few MBs with only some PDFs I want to store somewhere, where I can allways access them, when I need them.

    Greetings from Germany!

  29. Ramakishna Gudipudi on

i would recommend 100 MB file size plan

  30. Mike on

I would go wiht the $2. On the other hand I think the prcing in general is high. E.g. I can use a .Mac account for less than $9/mo and get 20GB of storage and no limits on file size. Overall the pricing seems a little high. I would also recommend a tier that has no file size limit. Once in a while I have a need to transfer a file that is over 1GB.

  31. Joel Bautista on

    2 gigs for $2.

  32. electronicfiles on

    Hi, Luke.

Well, I love the service and I would be willing to pay for it but the marketing guys need to wake up.

At this point, I would only buy the service “IF and only IF” I could use the 1GB option to save files larger than 50MB. Wake up folks. Stop telling me, the end user, your customer, what I can and cannot do with the space that I am buying from you, the provider. Honestly, I’m just sick of it.

If I want to store a poster for a client that is the size of 878MB, let me do that with my 1GB storage space. Why not? Then, oh my gosh. One day, when I have a need for more space, guess who I’ll buy from? You. Keep putting parameters on your sales and marketing and you will never be successful. GIVE something to me now and I’ll be your customer forever.

I have already sent half a dozen people to your site. They tell me that they love it. So, why screw up a good thing. You know you’ve got a great product. Keep it that way.

    ki

  33. fg on

Considering I’m only at 3% of the 1MG I have available, $3 for 3MG is a huge amount of storage for a very reasonable price if I were wanting to upgrade.
Keep up the fantastic work guys!

    fg / Riverside, CA

  34. Rafael on

i’d only pay if i could integrate this into the system.
i use mac, but i don’t want to use idisk.
but i find idisk feature really great.
i wanted to do something like this:
    http://www.mactips.org/archives/2008/04/29/creating-a-free-alternative-to-idisk/

  35. Sam on

I really don’t use more than 10% of my 1GB space so I really don’t see myself needing to upgrade!!

I got a couple of suggestion though

    1. I agree with electronicfiles –> if I am gona pay for a service why restrict the size of file I upload. SO if I have 2 GB of space I might as well upload 4 files of 500 MB….

    2. I would love to see the bulk (folder) download feature –> That would make Dropboks perfect!!

    3. I think you should also give the option for people to donate :) . That way people like me who really don’t need to upgrade (I assume there are lots who don’t want yo upgrade) but fell guilty of using such a great product for free could donate of their as much as think Dropboks is a value add for them without committing.

    4. Also you need to make what happens in case I want to switch between the paid service & free service? Would this be possible!!

    Cheers,
    Sam

  36. Maria Rangel on

It would be nice to have more storage, but how are you going to recieve the money?

  37. mclocks on

5gb, with the payment. Looks good value.

  38. travis on

Can you add the “multi” feature to downloading as well? It takes ridiculously long to have to download each file separately. The uploading works great. Thanks.

  39. Kev on

I’d recommend you scale differently, perhaps:
    1GB – $1
    2GB – $1.90
    3GB – $2.60
    4GB – $3.50
    5GB – $4.00
    10GB – $7.00

  40. Jorge on

Going with the first price bracket won’t help much as it only increases the file size to 100mb but not the available space. I wouldn’t use this upgrade.

The 200mb/2gb bracket would certainly be an upgrade that I would use. Go with this one.

Agree with travis on June 7, 2008: we need a multi file download and deletion.

  41. Steve Mansfield on

I am most likely to work my way up the list of size requirements as the database I am backing up increases in size. I would expect others to do the same. I would suggest implementing the lower size paid option first.

  42. sb on

    i’d definitely do the 2 or 3 gig/month plan.

  43. mersayochan on

    2GB/200MB/$2

  44. adkinsjeff on

I think whatever price point is offered I would go for a yearly plan, I hope you offer that.

I am not to concerned with the max file size and I think the total storage space is the critical part.

So as an example I would love to be able to pay $33 for the 3 gig storage plan (hey 1 month free for paying for a year in advance!). This would primarily be for personal items I need to access on different systems.

1GB Account (50MB max file size) – Free

    Greetings, from Lima, Peru,

  46. Graidh Hammond on

The $2 option is the one I’d go with, 2G is more than enough for me.

  47. Eloine on

I would start out with the 2 gig option and then upgrade to the max if it looks like I will need it but first would like to see how stable the system it. I would like a way to multible download many files since my clients use the site to upload a lot of files it’s real pain to have to download one by one.

  48. Andrew Ahn on

    3Gb account would be lovely.

  50. vesna on

5GB/500Mb would be a good start for those who need it for work as well as for private purposes. I’d start w/ that.

  51. Ed Zinkiewicz on

I only need the 2 GB now. May need more later.

I’ll be happy to participate in the initial test.

I am interested in having different folders for different clients that I want to transfer files with. Please help me out here – I’ll need to be able to 1) create folders with indiducal passwords or 2) sign up for alternate accounts using the same email address. I’ll gladly pay $1 or $2 per month for each client to get the functionality.

    edz

  52. Ed Zinkiewicz on

indiducal – in english it is supposed to be “individual”

  53. Mark on

50 MB free, just use to transfer files

  54. Yvonne on

I think the $2 trial is the best option.

  55. Travis on

    I like the $2/month 2 gig one

  56. Ken on

I probably will not ever need more than the 1GB – 50MB free service, but I would consider paying up to $12 or possibly $24 per year to help support your great service. I would definitely NOT pay more under any circumstance. Keep up the good work but PLEASE stick to your original concept of keeping it simple.

  57. Martha on

I only have one folder that is nearly 600mb, so I have it backed up elsewhere, since I can’t get it up there on your site. Otherwise, I don’t see myself utilizing over 1GB of storage. It is not clear to me if your pricing options mean that if there is a one time upload of say 500mb, but the over all storage amount stays under 1GB, if you are suggesting a fee for that one time or if that would be a monthly payment no matter what. Since we don’t earn American salaries where I come from, and every dollar counts, I don’t have a preference regarding which option you implement first.

  58. PK Trehan on

Good starting point could be to keep 5GB and more as paid service. One pays for minimum 5GB and gets the capacity recharged as the usage increases. However to keep it as preferred service compared to “briefcase” service by Yahoo etc.(which is free), better to provide facility of bulk downloading.
Quantum of response of users is mind bogging and indicator of popularity; no doubt the concept and business proposal is right way to go.

  59. 4nak1n on

I think 5GB is good and reasonable. But with a problem, we can’t download multi-files in Dropboks, but we can upload multi-files. That is an disadvantage for this great website. Hope you can upgrape soon.

  60. qidgets on

You should look at your ‘competition’ in the same branche: online filestorage service, look at their options(storage) versus prices and be creative. I personally think the 5gb = 5, is the best one. For document and image purposes. Of course free (and happpy about it) is my favorite.

  61. Gurjeet on

To Me 1GB and 2GB Option are good but do increase the size of the file to be Uploaded

    Thanks

  62. Donna on

I like the free storage but will need more space. Your price scale is great

  63. T Sandoval ( Big Bear ) on

I can tell by the very clear wording that the free service will continue uninterrupted, which should do well for many home users.

I represent many commercial, non profit organizations in which I recommend your service as a great location for off-site back storage.

I would expect most realistically think the 5 gb for $5.o/month to be your best test model.

Although, I am waiting to see the 10gb/1gb max feature be available as many of the Full OS backups I do run into the 500mb – 1 gb size regularly.

I am very glad to see your site and service growing and continuing secure off site storrage. keep up the good work.

P.S. We will continue to encourage our users at Business Edition Linux of our server solutions to make use of your site.

  64. Stefan Klose on

I don’t think a file size of more than 100mb is required for most of us. It would be much better to get up to 5gb oder 10gb of space.

    Stefan

  65. Cameron on

I’d probably go with the 5GB option.

  66. Geeske on

Hi there! I will continue to use the free service, but I suppose that people who can not use the free service would be best served with the 5GB option.
    Cheers

  67. MaCo on

    I agree with Stefan Klose:
I don’t think a file size of more than 100mb is required for most of us. It would be much better to get up to 5gb oder 10gb of space.

That said, you’ve done your thinking and I think that 3for3 would be my #1 chooice, and 5for5 #2.

    Thanks

  68. Jimbo on

Maybe there is already a file size limit attached to your free service, but I never realized it before now. I am close to that limit now. I use your service to make my genealogy database available to others. I know of no other easy, free way to do that. Regardless of what price point you start with, once you associate a free 1GB Account with a 50MB max file size, I will have to seek an alternative to DropBox. The 1 GB free storage is not a limitation for me.

  69. rodent on

I’m a 3 for $3 person, myself. Thanks for listening.

  70. Brian R on

I’d start with the 5 gig option. Smaller amounts aren’t worth the effort of paying- its companies and heavy users who you will make money from.

  71. Virender on

As per my opinion, paid service should start from 3GB onwards so that small users do not steer away to other providers as you offer good services.

  72. ari on

I would say any of the options 2-5GB

  73. Simon on

In times of Googlemail with about 6GB together with eg. Gspace there is no need to pay for filestorage in the net.
I use dropboks as long as it is for free.

  74. M on

I’d think about paying for it, but through my My Live with Vista, I get 5gigs free. I like the simplicity of the site, and have used you for awhile, but not sure how much more I need.

  75. mjl on

I agree with Ari – any of the 2-5 GB options, but I’d lean a bit to the lower end (2-3 GB).

  76. Kaushal on

i think 2$ acct and/or 5$ acct would be good point to start ur upgrade…….
    thanks for ur offers…..

  77. angelosd on

I say 2GB/200MB/$2, but suggest a per year discount price, like $20 for the year for the above package for example. thx

  78. Matt on

I’d probably go for the 2GB one

  79. Michael on

1 Gig is fine for me at present but may appreciate 2G later down the track.
Very much appreciate your service already

  80. Bob Carlton on

Wow, looks good to me; will you have the payments on a quarterly, annual or other basis. Love using your service. It’s been a lifesaver, especially in dealing with persons overseas.

  81. M on

    Definitely the 2 GB.
No need to scare away new users or the old faithfuls.
It won’t be a huge cash boost for you, but people are much more likely to ease up the upgrade ladder then take a huge step.

  82. Elizabeth on

I really like the simplicity of Dropboks but am on tight budget, and it’s for personal use (not business) so would opt for lower end, such as $2.

  83. Vk on

    I absolutely agree with M.

This is just for testing purposes.

2GB is the right option to go, since the 5GB and larger one will going to launch too.

Then it can be upgraded to larger capacity at that time.

  84. Jan on

    Hi,

I’ll stay with the free version.

  86. Fatimeh on

I think $2.00 is a good choice. Everyone can spare 2 dollars a month

  87. Larry on

I need 20GB (and willing to pay). As I need it RIGHT NOW, I have to go elsewhere – please write back when you have it. thanks!

  88. Robert on

I would think that the $2/2GB option would be where I would start. Are you planning a monthly bill or annual? I would like see a monthly plan using electronic withdrawl from by bank account.

  89. Peggy on

I would like the 1GB, 1MG option. My funds are limited but would like to upload short videos of grandbabies

  90. Ross on

$2/month for 2 Gb would be my preference for upgrade, although I don’t need more than the 1 Gb free service at the moment.

  91. Fu Xue on

I think we should leave free at some price, but 10GB i think below 10 USD will be better!

  92. Batavier on

$2/month for 2GB is still a tad expensive, but $2 is a good starting point. How about $2 for 4GB?
    $3 for 6GB etc. ?

And it’s good you’re keeping the free option. :)

  93. Terry Bullion on

I think the 2GB Account (200MB max file size) – $2/Month would be good.

  94. Dan on

    Free site should be first.

  95. Mr Fantasy on

I think the pricing is a little bit expensive. For $10/month, we can get at least 100 GB space of web hosting nowadays. Consider to make it cheaper because I believe you don’t have to really worry about the monthly bandwidth cost like the web hosting companies do.

P.S. It’d be nice if DropBoks has an upload progress meter. That way I can know how long should I wait for the transfers to be completed. Thanks!

  96. Cookie Lee on

$3 plan is the best – not too expensive but offer enough space.

  97. Jason on

I would do the 5GB. That would be plenty of space and large enough file size.

  98. pete on

the free feature should definitely be kept because im poor an i cant pay for online storage

  99. Alan on

I’m a free member, only sending you a couple of mgs. but my reaction would be that $2 – $3 monthly would be reasonable. As people have observed there are other ways of storing files and with the “credit squeeze” tightening things are going to get tough out there.

  100. Kevin on

It has already been established that the free plan will always exist. For those of us who need more storage space, I would start off with the 5MB plan. This is reasonable considering the increasing size of multimedia files. For those who are on a budget or don’t need that much space, they can stick with the free plan. You get what you pay for. Those of us who run websites realize we must strike a balance of fair prices for the customer, while still managing to keep the site profitable. Needless to say, it costs money to keep a site up and running. Keep up the great work, and know that you have my full support.

  101. bng44270 on

It would be great if there was FTP access to our files along with the web interface.

  102. Harrison on

I’m in general agreement with everyone else. THe 2 – 3 Gb storage would be the best.

  103. Bektash on

I’d say try the 2Gb/200Mb/$2 option first.

  104. Patrice on

$2 for 2GB with 200MB file size limit

  105. Thomas on

    2GB Account (200MB max file size) – $2/Month

  106. mocona on

I still need a free service.. but can I suggest a widget or some embed code so I can embed dropboks to my website ?

  107. bharat on

    I like $1 month plan

  108. Iuri on

Very intuitive, essential e effective. Just what I need.

  109. Rey on

5GB. This one is most competitive. How about an automatic upgrade based on usage in a given month?

  110. David on

I’d jump on the 2GB. And then with time, after routinely uploading and downloading files and getting use to the functionality and usefulness, I would most likely increase to 5GB. David

  111. Mike on

I think that a 700MB/10GB/$10 would be great.

  112. Mike on

What I meant to say was 700MB/10GB/$7

  113. darin on

love the idea. You may want to talk about security of files, where they are stored, etc. 1gb free, 5 gb- $5. An automated featured would be great.

  114. Chuck on

Since you asked for comments, I have been looking for some time for a simple online upload/download package that I can access from multiple computes through a browser. I am not interested in scheduled backups. I like the simplicity of your service. I would like to see, at some point, a 10-20GB option. In comparison with other online storage sites, your projected pricing seems a little high. Based on other sites, I would expect to pay between $50 and $75 for 20GB on a yearly basis. Also, I would like to be able to upload/download complete folders. And, if I understand what I read correctly, you only except PayPal? I’m used to credit card payments and have never used PayPal and don’t think I would use it.

  115. Aku on

It definitely can’t be the 1GB version, but I’d say the rest is up to you.
I, personally, wouldn’t pay for any of them since I just don’t need to store that much stuff on the net.
